Workshop CHI 2019

Unprecedented global changes are taking place, bringing with them uncertainty about possible futures. Whatever these futures might be, technology is bound to have a significant role. Therefore, we believe that there is room for HCI to engage, to a much larger extent than currently, in long-term research, cross-disciplinary teamwork, and matters of global concern, e.g., consumption, climate change, biodiversity, and increasing divides. This workshop focuses on exploring how this engagement could take place: how to design and make technologies that explicitly support increased involvement in fostering large-scale societal changes towards a safe and just future. We ground our explorations within the framework of transition design, finding pathways that bridge the present and the future, using a combination of theories of change, visions for the future, posture, and new ways of designing. We invite HCI researchers, design researchers, practitioners, educators and all others deeply passionate about addressing the global challenges we are witnessing today.

The participants are selected based on their position papers. The papers should be 4 pages long and use the SIGCHI Extended Abstract format, and address the theme of the workshop and can present both theoretical, designerly or other explorations of the theme. The papers should be sent via email to both organizers (almira@ifi.uio.no and majava@ifi.uio.no). At least one author of each accepted position paper must attend the workshop and all participants must register for both the workshop and for at least one day of the conference.
